Airport Sustainability Reporting Guidelines now open for public review

The first draft of the Airport Sustainability Reporting Guidelines is now available for public consultation. This is a major step forward in the process of developing uniform sustainability reporting guidelines, an initiative taken by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

The public consultation period started on 13 January and runs until 5 March 2010.

Given the importance of a uniform sustainability reporting framework, your comments will be highly valued. Please use the following link to submit your comments to GRI:

Background
For the past two years, the Global Reporting Initiative worked on developing airport specific performance indicators as part of the GRI sustainability reporting framework. The result is a tool with global guidelines on which to base sustainability reporting. NACO provided in-kind support in this process.

The Airport Operator Sector Supplement is an answer to the growing demand for transparency and accountability with regard to sustainability issues and performance. Airports are facing the challenge of managing increasing air traffic numbers whilst minimizing sustainability impacts. The airport sector supplement acts as guidance to airports for reporting environmental impacts. Furthermore, adherence to the same reporting framework allows for comparison between airports and their sustainability performance.

The airport operator sector supplement has been developed by a multi-stakeholder Working Group, including: Athens International Airport S.A., ASUR Mexico, Denver International Airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Munich Airport, Fraport AG, Port of Portland, San Diego Airport, Toronto International Airport and Unique (Zurich Airport Inc); Adecon-Citizen Protection Association, Air Initiative for Asian Cities, Aviation Environment Federation, Bundesvereinigung gegen Fluglärm, Centre for Science and Environment Clean, Dexia Asset Management, SEIU Local 2006, Swedish Transport Workers Union and UNEP.

The consultation process is an important step towards developing a widely accepted document.
