In the lead-up to the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change, we were given the opportunity to contribute to a film that shows the dramatic and immediate impact of climate change on Bangladesh, one of the worlds poorest nations.
Our Dhaka based engineer Mr Gerard Pichel introduced the film crew to the local climate change issues. And in the film he gives pragmatic solutions for coastal Bangladesh where more than 60 million people live and work: "We can help nature create land out of the yearly huge amounts of river sediment and so reclaim new land off the coast to cope with long-term effects of climate change."
The ½ hour film looks at the water issues of Bangladesh – where the rising seas, melting glaciers, and increasing monsoons are displacing millions of people. Yet there are also some creative adaptations that may teach us about how to survive the future threats.
